Is Imane a boy or girl name?

Short answer: Imane is a girl's name in almost every country where it is used. The longer answer is more interesting, because the Arabic word behind it is grammatically masculine and the closely related spelling Iman is given to boys in several regions.

Imane is a female name in practice

In Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, France, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Québec — the places where the spelling Imane is at home — the name is given to girls. If you meet an Imane in Casablanca, Lyon, or Brussels, you can safely assume she is a woman. The same is true for the North African sister spellings Imen and Imene.

Part of the reason is the spelling itself. In French, a final -e is strongly associated with feminine words and names (Louise, Simone, Hélène), so the French-style transliteration Imane reads naturally as feminine. Families wanting a name with the same meaning for a boy usually reach for a different name from the same root, such as Amine ("trustworthy").

Why the word itself is not feminine

In Arabic grammar, īmān (إيمان) is a verbal noun meaning "faith", and it is grammatically masculine. It has no feminine ending such as the -a of Amina or Karima. That is why, unlike many Arabic girls' names, Imane does not "look" feminine to an Arabic speaker on its own. Its feminine status comes from custom — how families have chosen to use it — rather than from grammar.

Many Arabic virtue names work the same way. Abstract nouns like Amal (hope), Nour (light), and Iman (faith) are mostly given to girls in the Maghreb and the West, but in other regions they can be used for boys too.

Where Iman is a boy's name

The spelling Iman, without the -e, is genuinely unisex worldwide:

Well-known male Imanes

Two prominent men show that the name can cross over even in its -e spelling. Imane Ayissi is a Cameroonian haute couture designer who shows in Paris, and Imane Merga is an Ethiopian distance runner who won the 2011 World Cross Country Championships. Both are exceptions to the general rule, and both come from outside the francophone Maghreb, where the female use is firmly fixed. You can read about them, and about famous women named Imane, on the famous Imanes page.

Choosing Imane for a boy or girl today

If you are naming a daughter, Imane is a clear, unambiguous choice in any francophone or Arab country, and a distinctive one in English-speaking countries. If you are naming a son, consider whether he will grow up in a place where the name is read as feminine. In France or Morocco he would likely be assumed to be a girl on paper; in Iran or the United States, Iman would raise no eyebrows. Related names with a clearer masculine use include Amine, Amin, and Mumin ("believer").
